The peripheral blood smear contains numerous cells with open chromatin, variably prominent nucleoli, scant to moderately abundant cytoplasm, occasional cytoplasmic granules and frequent Auer rods, consistent with myeloid blasts.
Sheets of blast cells with oval to irregular nuclei, prominent nucleoli and scant to moderate amounts of cytoplasm comprise 75% of the marrow cellularity.
In the aspirate smear, the blasts are medium-sized with round to slightly irregular nuclei, fine chromatin, multiple prominent nucleoli, and basophilic cytoplasm with occasional cytoplasmic granules and Auer rods.
